“Your forefathers saved me because of my importance. If you collect my nuts, you can get a lot of money. My butter is a moisturizer that soothes you. The butter that comes from me can be used to fry food which is nice to eat. The bees that visit me produce the best honey in the world.”
Extracts from a Poem on Shea trees by Cultural Chief of Patongo Clan of Acholi in Agago District, Kassimiro Ongom, as reported by Caroline Ayugi in URN
Chief Ongom’s advocacy for the conservation of Shea trees speaks to the high value that Blessed Organic Release (BOR) attaches to its Shea value chain at all stages. From tree to the finished product, BOR ensures the inherent value in Shea is retained; delivering to the consumer high value products.

- Honey from the nectar of Shea tree flowers
- Hot pressed Shea butter, ready to eat with food – Moo Yaa (ground, boiled and oil is skimmed)
- Cold pressed Shea butter, for use in food preparation, cooking oil
Within the BOR geography of operation, Shea trees are common property, belonging to the community as a whole. The predominant land tenure system is Customary Tenure in which ownership is defined by use-rights as opposed to absolute ownership rights. Read more in-depth analysis of Uganda’s land tenure systems.
Community members are free, on a first come first serve basis, to pick ripened Shea fruits that have dropped off the tree to the ground. Ancestors’ wisdom continues to inform this tradition and practice for it is believed it contributes to obtaining good quality Shea butter.
BOR 6,000 strong Shea nut collectors are organized in groups of 25-30 farmers with each baring a code number that is trackable in order to assure organic integrity and quality standards. Read more about BOR nut collectors.
The nuts are collected and brought to the BOR central processing facility that meets international standards and best practice in Shea nut processing and packaging. It is located in Pader Town Council in Pader District in Northern Uganda.
