It is beyond my comprehension that Shea Trees are among endangered species. A woman’s tree that is so valuable as a source of food, medicines, skin care products, income and more.
Sadly, the reason it is endangered in the Shea belt of Uganda, is because of the male dominated income generating activity of charcoal burning.
And then the changes in land use that we have adopted, in which ‘development’ and ‘modern’ are defined or arrived at via deforestation and destruction of trees.
Not only are species endangered, even our cultures are endangered. We used to have cultural values, practices and taboos that were used in ecological conservation. Now very few know about them.
These trends concern me and that is how I know I am a grown up.
